Wellington is a fantastic city to be in even if you’re not running around it looking for clues and trying to unravel challenges. Come for the stag do and the Amazing Race but stay for the endless (and endlessly interesting) other activities. Just for starters there’s:
CUBA STREET: One of Wellington’s most famous streets. When folks talk about the nightlife in Wellington, well, there are wicked clubs and cool spots to drink all over the city. But this street just keeps coming up again and again and again. This vibrant, colour-filled bohemian promenade is one km long and home to cafes, shops, restaurants and – of course – bars. Check out San Fran, which declares itself the best live music venue in Wellington, or the cocktail and craft beer joint Laundry.
THE WELLINGTON CABLE CAR: If you want a great view of the city of Wellington, it’s hard to go past this local icon. There’s a reason it’s in so many tourism photos! Take a five-minute ride from the Lambton Quay, the heart of the CBD, to Kelburn, where you can then visit the Cable Car Museum, the Botanic Garden and Carter Observatory’s Space Place.
MUSEUM OF TE PAPA TONGAREWA: Check out New Zealand’s national museum and all of its art, history, artifacts and treasures. This museum has six floors of interactive exhibits, and it’s absolutely perfect for a day of hungover browsing or if you just want to pop in and see something new.
ZEALANDIA: This wildlife sanctuary set around a scenic reservoir is as close as you’ll get to seeing what Wellington looked like before humans arrived. Check out the wide variety of animals here including animals, plants and trees found in no other country.
THE WETA CAVE: Movie buff? Check out Peter Jackson’s WETA cave and workshop to see life-sized sculptures, artefacts and a mini-museum.
